Shutdown and SNAP: Join Anti-Hunger Advocates on Tuesday at Noon Rally for SNAP Funding

After Tuesday’s Coalition meeting (see below), please join the Make Hunger History Coalition and anti-hunger advocates on the State House steps this Tuesday, Oct. 28 from 12 - 1pm to rally for SNAP funding. We will rally and hold a press availability on the steps (image of the steps on Beacon Street in Boston below), and urge government to act quickly to ensure families get November SNAP on time. The Trump Administration should act immediately to fully fund SNAP for November - USDA has emergency funds intended for this exact situation. If the federal government fails to do this quickly, then Massachusetts must step up and use state resources to fund SNAP in November.

Please RSVP here! In the meantime, please see this MLRI resource on the shutdown and SNAP for more information.

SNAP Harmful Republican Megabill Cuts - What to Know

Today, DTA and the Governor shared information stating the 3 eligibility cuts in OB3 begin November 1. We want to underscore that this process is not like flipping a switch - the cuts will harm people over time. We have heard from a number of partners about confusion or with questions about how these cuts will work - we are worried some of the messaging from DTA and the Governor today may have unintentionally caused confusion (we have asked DTA to clarify).

We want to reiterate the following because we do not want recipients to worry unnecessarily or call DTA when they don’t need to:

  • Very few people will lose SNAP due to the cuts in November. (shutdown SNAP issuance delay questions aside)
  • DTA, under federal law, must screen households for changes during the Recertification before it applies any of the 3 cuts.
  • As a result, people harmed by these cuts will be harmed on a rolling basis over the next 12+ months.
  • MLRI will share more resources on these changes next week! In the meantime, we are re-sharing an updated version of our chart here.
