Steward's Bankruptcy

Health-Law-Announcements

On May 6, 2024, Steward Health Care System LLC and 166 of its affiliated debtors  each filed a voluntary petition for relief under Chapter 11 in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas. The Steward website directs people to this website with more information about the restructuring.

The State has set up a website for patients with more information including a page of FAQs. Its message is that nothing will change immediately: Steward facilities in Massachusetts are open, operational, and providing care and services to patients and families and compliance with state safety standards is being monitored by the DPH. The state has also set up a Steward Health Care Call Center; (833) 305-2070 M-F 8 am to 6 pm.

In Massachusetts Steward owns the following hospitals:

  • Carney Hospital in Dorchester
  • Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton
  • Holy Family Hospital in Haverhill
  • Holy Family Hospital in Methuen
  • Morton Hospital in Taunton
  • Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer
  • Norwood Hospital (temporarily closed)
  • St. Anne's Hospital in Fall River
  • St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Brighton

Steward also operates a MassHealth Primary Care ACO with 127,000 MassHealth members enrolled as of June 2023.

Much more to come as we learn what this means for the patients and employees of Steward's health system.
