SSA updated its POMS to clarify the policies regarding when collection of an SSI overpayment is against equity and good conscience. In response to advocates’ concerns for youth and adults transitioning from SSI to self-support, SSA is providing additional guidance to technicians for developing waiver requests on overpayments caused by statutory benefit continuation (SBC).
SSA added 3 examples of changing one’s position for the worse and relying on the SSI payment to purchase something one would not otherwise have purchased.
