All the information parents need to know in order to deal with the special rules on retroactive SSI benefits is contained in CDP’s Saving & Spending Workbook.

When children are awarded SSI benefits, they are often due a substantial amount of money in retroactive benefits, which are paid into a special account to be used only for medical and educational expenses. The Social Security Administration keeps a close eye on spending from the “dedicated account” into which the retroactive benefits are paid.

To help parents properly save and spend their child’s retroactive SSI benefits, and avoid problems with SSA, the Workbook explains all of the rules on setting up a dedicated account, spending the money properly, and documenting purchases.
