ABA Standards for Language Access in Courts

American Bar Association (ABA)

The American Bar Association House of Delegates adopted a new set of language access standards (see attached) for courts across the nation on February 6, 2012.

The standards are a guide for state Courts to better assist and be more accessible to the growing numbers of limited English proficient (LEP) people that enter the court system.

Providing equal access to justice through language services has been required by law for a long time under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, these standards have been developed to help courts comply with these laws and take tangible steps toward becoming more accessible to LEP populations.
