Policy Updates: 200% gross income & mileage inrcreases; At-a-glance FS/SNAP

In follow up to the January 25th Coalition meeting, here are some important Food Stamp/SNAP policy updates to share on the numbers:

1. Slight cost of living adjustment (COLA) in 200% FPL gross income test: The US Department of Health and Human Services issued the new Federal Poverty Level increases on January 20, 2011. The federal poverty level (FPL) has increased by 1.6% for 2011.

MLRI's Preliminary Analysis of Governor's FY 12 Budget Proposal

Here is a link to MLRI's preliminary analysis of the Governor's proposed budget for the coming fiscal year. Relevant to safety-net benefits and housing, the Governor proposes to deny emergency shelter to most families who are now eligible, offering them only the possibility of short-term housing assistance, even if they have nowhere to go while looking for housing with which to use that assistance.

Governor Patrick's proposed budget for FY 2012

Many Food SNAP Coalition members are closely monitoring the FY2012 budget to ensure adequate funding for DTA programs and services including cash assistance programs (TAFDC, EAEDC), employment and training, and DTA admin funding for front line SNAP staff. Members also monitor the budget for emergency food funding (MEFAP), emergency shelter, housing, health care and other key programs and services.

The next Food SNAP Coalition meeting is Tuesday, January 25th from 10 to Noon. The Coalition meeting will be held at ABCD on 178 Tremont Street, 3rd Floor (this is a change from our usual location). ABCD is right across the street from the Boylston Street T stop (green line) and right around the corner from the Chinatown T stop (orange line).
