Utility Rights Training @ ABCD on Friday, November 8th

ABCD is hosting its annual Utility Rights training for front line workers on Friday, November 8th from 10 AM to 2 PM. This terrific and timely training will focus on how to help economically-distressed households retain access to gas and electric utility services and how best to get services turned back on. Participants in the training will also receive a copy of NCLC’s excellent Utility Rights booklet; ABCD will also give an update on fuel assistance benefits (which program is available statewide through other CAP agencies, so the information will be useful for folks outside of the Boston area).

With the cuts to SNAP benefits coming in November due to the expiration of the ARRA SNAP increase, it will be even more important to maximize resources for low income households and avoid the "heat versus eat" dilemma. Go to www.masslegalservices.org/arra for more information on the SNAP ARRA cut and tips for screening households to maximize benefits. Additionally, if you know of SNAP recipients willing to speak with reporters about the impact of the ARRA SNAP cut on their benefits, please contact me, pbaker@mlri.org  We really need stories from around the state to underscore how harmful the November SNAP cut is and why Congress should both restore the ARRA boost in benefits and defend against any further SNAP cuts!
