Thanks to those of you who were able to attend yesterday's Food SNAP Coalition meeting, also attended by former Commissioner Julia Kehoe in her new role at EOHHS; FNS Regional Administrator James Arena DeRosa and FNS staff, and Ellen Vollinger, FRAC Legal Director. Ellen gave an excellent presentation on the current battles before Congress and what we need to do next steps to protect safety net programs.

We hope this email finds you actually NOT in your office and instead en route to family and friends, or nestled at home baking goodies, or volunteering at your local food bank.  But, if you are around, here's some Turkey Talk for the Thanksgiving weekend, brought to you by the National Women's Law Center.  These are important messages but I just wanted to note that not only was Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid on the table, so was SNAP. And, the short term good news is that SNAP is not a "discretionary program" and thus also protected from automatic cuts, for now.

This is a reminder that the November Food SNAP Coalition meeting is Tuesday, November 29th from 10 to Noon at St Francis House. We have an exciting agenda planned and hope you can make it. This will be the LAST Coalition meeting for 2011 as we traditionally avoid meetings during the Christmas/New Year holidays and school vacations. The Coalition will continue its monthly meetings in 2012 on the 4th Tuesday of each month.

1.  SNAP Web Application “minimum information” policy: DTA recent updated the on-line SNAP web application to comply with USDA requirements requiring states to accept an application with minimal information – the applicant’s name, address and signature - or electronic signature.

We received a copy of the email below llate last week announcing a change in the guard at DTA. Julia Kehoe will be moving over to EOHHS to take on a new Senior Policy Development position and Daniel Curley of the Justice Resource Institute will be taking the DTA helm. EOHHS Secretary Dr. Bigby's email gives more details.

SNAP Misfortune Replacement deadline extended until Nov 18th:  DTA has received approval from USDA to EXTEND the deadline for SNAP households to request replacement SNAP/food stamp benefits lost due to the Noreaster and power outages. Households may request a replacement of food purchased with SNAP benefits through Friday, November 18th.  (This is a 10 day extension from November 9th to November 19th).  DTA has been working overtime to respond to all the requests flooding in to the hardest hit areas.

As many of you know, the recent Nor'easter on October 29th brought significant damage to a number of communities including power outages. This is a REMINDER that SNAP recipients who lose food due to any misfortune, including a power outage (of more than 4 hours), can apply for replacement SNAP benefits. The amount of the replacement benefits is intended to replace food that was purchased with SNAP benefits and, in any event, cannot exceed the household's SNAP allotment. Households have 10 days from October 29th to request replacement benefits.
