As you likely read in today's press, House Republicans voted to slash critical safety-net programs including block-granting/cutting SNAP, Medicaid and more. However, the entire Massachusetts Congressional Delegation voted AGAINST the cuts!  Please call and thank them for the vote, and urge them keep fighting to protect essential low income programs. To find your Congressperson, go to:

Take NOTHING for granted. The Massachusetts Delegation needs to hear from all constituents about how irresponsible and outrageous the House Budget proposal is. It is ESSENTIAL that they hear from as many constituents as possible urging them to vote NO on Thursday (tomorrow), and also call or email again to THANK them after the vote. You can sent an email note, below, or call your Congress person's local or DC office directly.

Questions have surfaced about whether or not SNAP recipients who lost power due to the NSTAR transformer fire last week and resulting power outages are eligible for replacement SNAP benefits. The answer is YES!  SNAP recipients who lost food purchased with their SNAP benefits as a result of any power outage (e.g food which spoiled or had to be thrown out as a result of loss of electricity) are eligible to request SNAP replacement benefits. The current process is for a SNAP recipient to fill out a SNAP misfortune replacement request and fax or deliver it to the DTA office.

TWO Coalition meetings! The next Boston Food SNAP Coalition meeting is Tuesday, March 27th from 10 - 12 at St Francis House in Boston.

The Witness to Hunger photo exhibit opened yesterday at the State House and continues through Thursday, with special events today. Below is a detailed news story with comments from the House Speaker and Senate President.  Major kudos to Child Health Watch, Project Bread and ABCD for bringing this important photo exhibit to the State House. Most importantly, major thanks to the eight Boston area women who have shared their photos and life stories in the struggle against hunger.

Thanks to so many of you who attended last Thursday’s Basic Benefits Training on Immigrants and Benefits. We had close to 150 participants, just underscoring how critical this basic immigrant/benefits eligibility information continue to be for local community groups. MLRI has great resources on-line if you still  have questions about which immigrants qualify for SNAP, cash, health care, and links to resources that can help you interpret immigration document codes.
