TODAY National SNAP Day of Action, DTA updates & training

Important action alert and information below! Our next SNAP Coalition Zoom will be next Tuesday, 8/18.

National SNAP Day of Action TODAY - Make some noise!

Today (Monday 8/10) join national groups and organizations across the country in a day of action to tell Congress not to go home until a relief package is passed that boosts SNAP. See below eblast from FRAC for action steps.

Also, in response to the President signing executive orders over the weekend - please see this informative blog post from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities explaining why the orders  "fall dramatically short of responding effectively to the enormous need across the country due to COVID-19 and the deep recession."

DTA update: No interview needed for certain applications or Recertifications

DTA is currently waiving (not requiring) interviews for SNAP applications and Recertifications when they have all the information they need to process the case. For more information - including a flow chart from MLRI on how this works for applications - see the google doc.

Note for Recertifications: The Recertification form does not list income that DTA is counting for the household. If the interview is waived, some households may be confused and not know to update DTA on their income. Please tell households you are working with on a Recertification to tell DTA if their income has changed.

MLRI & GBLS training - focus on individuals facing homelessness

MLRI and GBLS are doing a training for Pine Street Inn this Friday, August 14 from 1:30-3 pm on DTA benefits (SNAP and EAEDC) - with a focus on accessing and keeping benefits for individuals facing homelessness and grappling with housing instability. If you would like to join, please click here to register and Vicky will follow up with Zoom information.

Hungry People Can’t Wait. Tell Congress: #BoostSNAPNow to Fill Empty Plates.

National Day of Action: Monday, August 10

On August 10, join FRAC, leading national anti-hunger partners, and others around the country in a day of action to tell Congress not to go home until a COVID-19 relief package is passed that boosts SNAP benefits to put food on empty plates and stimulate the economy.

Create a Virtual Paper Plate

Send your message to Congress on a virtual paper plate that shows why the SNAP boost is so critical to people in your state. Urge Congress not to leave D.C. until the boost is included in the final COVID-19 deal. Check out FRAC’s sample plates for ideas and also this virtual paper plate tool from Feeding America.

1. Post a picture of your plate on Twitter with #BoostSNAPNow. Be sure your message reaches your Members of Congress by tagging them — find their handles here.

2. Email a picture of your plate along with your strong message on the need to boost SNAP to your Members of Congress. You can email them by using this resource.

It is critical for Members of Congress to weigh in with House and Senate leadership who are embroiled in daily negotiations (on what could be the last major COVID-19 package until after the elections), with the following message:

The final COVID-19 relief package must:

  • boost SNAP maximum benefits by 15 percent, which would help all SNAP households;
  • increase the minimum monthly SNAP benefit from $16 to $30; and
  • suspend SNAP time limits or administrative rule changes that would cut benefits.

Remember, each $1 in SNAP Benefits in a downturn generates between $1.50 to $1.80 in economic activity.
