Special Open Enrollment period through April 25, 2020 in response to COVID-19
The Division of Insurance and the Health Connector have announced a new special enrollment period from Mar 12 to April 25, 2020 to allow uninsured people who want to buy individual coverage to enroll. The regular open enrollment period for 2020 coverage ended Jan 23, 2020. This new special open enrollment period is in response to the Covid-19 public health emergency & gives people who missed the regular open enrollment period a second chance to sign up for coverage. People who are eligible for MassHealth or "newly eligible" for ConnectorCare can apply and enroll at any time of year, but other people trying to get insurance on their own (not through an employer or group) are limited to open enrollment & special enrollment periods. With this new special enrollment period, US citizens and "lawfully present" immigrants can apply for and enroll in subsized or unsubsidized coverage through the Health Connector. People can apply for and enroll in unsubsidized coverage directly with the health insurance companies regardless of citizenship or immigration status.
This is also a second chance for people who were newly eligible for ConnectorCare but missed their enrollment deadline. For ConnectorCare, people found eligible must select a plan and pay the first month's premium if any (some subsidized coverage may have no premium) by the 23d of the month for coverage to begin on the 1st of the following month. The special enrollment period ends April 25, 2020.
