PR Evacuee children - latest student enrollment count, and general info on SNAP/cash cases
Thanks to all who made the Boston SNAP Coalition meeting.
Below is data from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) regarding the number of children who have fled from PR to MA and enrolled in MA public schools. Springfield, Worcester, New Bedford and Boston have the most. Diana Santiago of Mass Advocates for Children shipped over this DESE data last night. See also MassLive article regarding children with special needs. http://www.masslive.com/politics/index.ssf/2017/11/schools_face_challenges_accomo.html
The Baker Admin is tracking requests for services from evacuees from Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria (e.g. PR, FL, LA and TX). Schools have been asked by DESE to report increased enrollment as well, which is the basis of this data.
Also, DTA reported recently to advocates, and confirmed at the Boston SNAP Coalition yesterday, that they have taken roughly 2,000 SNAP and/or cash assistance applications from PR evacuee households - mostly SNAP only (we do not have a breakdown). The state anticipates a significant influx of PR evacuees in the coming months as families leave the island. DTA reported that many PR evacuee adults are quickly finding jobs, which may partially explains why households are applying for SNAP only benefits.
PLEASE keep us informed of what you are seeing any any legal resource you need for your Hurricane-evacuee clients.
