DTA Overhauls SNAP Medical Expense Guidance!!

MLRI, Central West Justice Center, Greater Boston Legal Services, the Greater Boston Food Bank, and Jewish Family and Children's Service spent a great deal of time making recommendations to DTA on how it could improve its policies and guidance for SNAP workers when it comes to medical expenses. As a result, DTA recently overhauled its written medical expenses guidance, found in the DTA Online Guide here (review the other updated pages on medical expenses by clicking "show" in the upper left hand corner of your screen).

This is a vast improvement, and we think will help DTA workers better communicate with seniors and persons with disabilities about medical expenses. In particular, we are very pleased to see that the guidance includes improved details about different types of countable medical costs, clarification about self declaration of frequency of expenses, and the addition of suggested language on how to talk with clients about medical expenses.

Claiming medical expenses for SNAP can help boost SNAP benefits for older adults and persons with disabilities. To learn more about SNAP and medical expenses, see MLRI's Know Your Rights flier here in English and here in Spanish
