MLRI FAQs on basic SNAP, cash assistance and MassHealth benefits for Puerto Rico evacuees arriving in Massachusetts

Fliers in English and Spanish for individuals and families from Puerto Rico who need very basic safety-net benefits while getting their bearings in Massachusetts can be viewed here: https://www.masslegalservices.org/content/faqs-basic-%E2%80%8Bbenefits-and-legal-rights-puerto-rico-evacuees-massachusetts. The FAQs cover basic individual and family eligibility for:

  • SNAP food assistance,
  • TAFDC cash assistance, and
  • MassHealth.

Also included, two FAQs from Mass Advocates for Children (MAC) on special education rights.

The state has projected that approximately 5,000 individuals have evacuated from PR to the state to date, and more expected to come over the next few months as the island continues to struggle with recovery.

See also yesterday's MassLive article regarding $1M donated from the Massachusetts United for Puerto Rico fund: $740K going directly to local organizations in Puerto Rico and $265K distributed to 13 organizations, mostly in  in Western MA. https://www.masslive.com/politics/index.ssf/2017/12/wmass_organizations_get_money.html  Please consider donations directly to Puerto Rico or organizations supporting evacuees during your holiday giving.

Please let MLRI know what issues you are seeing with PR families and individuals accessing basic benefits.  We will ship out additional fliers as they are developed and also send the weblink where we post these.
