Applications for 2020 Healthy Food Financing Initiative (HFFI) Funding

Due Friday, July 10

Dear Colleague:

On behalf of the Reinvestment Fund, we want to alert your offices to the fast-approaching deadline for 2020 grant and technical assistance applications for the Healthy Food Financing Initiative (HFFI).  $3 million is available for grants as well as additional technical assistance available directly to eligible projects.  The deadline to apply is Friday, July 10.

Nearly 40 million Americans live in low-income rural, urban, or tribal communities where they cannot readily access fresh, healthy and affordable food.  HFFI provides a comprehensive model for addressing limited and inequitable access to affordable and nutritious food by providing one-time loan and grant financing to build grocery stores, mobile markets, food hubs, and other fresh food enterprises in underserved areas and enable existing stores to renovate and/or expand so they can stay open and provide the healthy foods communities want and need.  HFFI also helps to create jobs, generate tax revenue, catalyze economic activity and establish new market opportunities for our nation’s farmers, benefiting both rural and urban communities.

HFFI projects can be completed quickly and can generate major economic impacts by creating and preserving local grocery stores that provide well-paying, steady jobs.  On average, a 50,000 square foot supermarket creates 250 full-time jobs, while a 10,000 square foot supermarket creates 25 full and part time jobs.  This is in addition to associated construction work and expanded market opportunities for American farmers.

For more information, including the full text of the application, visit the Reinvestment Fund HFFI website at  For questions, contact the program helpdesk at
