ABAWD 3-month time limit - important update:
We have received a LOT of calls from low income households and community orgs about the Trump Administration final SNAP rules impacting “able-bodied adults without dependents” or ABAWDs, including from low-income persons worried about losing their SNAP benefits.
First, please assure the low income households you work with:
1. These SNAP rules are NOT in effect until April 1st. After that, SNAP recipients who may be subject to the 3-month time limit must be screened for exemptions. See MLRI’s SNAP ABAWD Fact Sheet on who is exempt from the SNAP time limits.
2. The earliest anyone might lose SNAP in the impacted areas of the state is July 1st - but a court could also step in and decide that USDA did not follow the federal process for issuing these rules. We will keep you posted.
Second, KEEP UP the noise and follow the hashtag #HandsOffSNAP on Twitter and Facebook for more updates.
In addition to the media we sent out last Friday, here is an awesome Boston Sunday Globe column by Yvonne Abraham “There are Real Americans, and then there are the rest of us” and here is a Western Mass News article, Activist group outraged by President Trump's SNAP proposal.
We encourage you to submit letters to the editor or comments to the news outlets thanking them for their coverage and sharing your concerns about these rules. And stay tuned for more action steps as we move into the giving season. #HandsOffSNAP
