Eleven MA School Districts Receive Eos Funding to Expand Breakfast in Classroom Programs this School Year (SY14-15)

Many of you have been working hard with your local school districts on the Community Eligibility provision (CEP) as well as on school breakfast issues. Just wanted to be sure you saw the news from the Eos Foundation, making awards to eleven school districts this school year to boost breakfast in the classroom and their update from school year 13/14.

This is just a quick reminder of the SNAP Coalition Meeting on Tuesday, September 23rd in Boston from 10 to Noon at St Francis House in Boston.

The tentative AGENDA will include:
  • Update on Farm Bill 2014 implementation including Heat and Eat; changes affecting EBT vendors; SNAP E&T federal pilot
  • Reminder on October 1st COLA to SNAP benefits and allowable income deductions (standard deduction and shelter costs)

MassHealth/Connector Update

As of 8/31/14, there were still about 87,000 people enrolled in Commonwealth Care and 285,000 enrolled in temporary MassHealth coverage. The last notice they received was that their coverage would end on Dec. 31, 2014. Nov 15, 2014 -Feb 15, 2015 is  the next "open enrollment" period when anyone can sign up to purchase insurance in the individual market for coverage starting in 2015. The state is counting on having its new MassHealth/Connector eligibility and enrollment system up and running by November 15.

SNAP benefits and homeless youth/homeless adults: Advocacy materials and flagging eligiblity issues

We are writing to flag some issues that we have seen impacting homeless youth trying to obtain SNAP/food stamp benefits. (Many of these issues affect homeless adults and victims of domestic violence as well.) Some SNAP Coalition members and homeless youth providers have reported that homeless youth are encountering issues applying for SNAP and other benefits at DTA including problems obtaining verification, or confusion about the application process for a minor.

ACA and Exchange Learning Series Conference Call - Member Transition 2014-2015

MassHealth and the Connector are starting to get the word out that in a few months time several hundred thousand people who are now enrolled in temporary MassHealth or Commonwealth Care will be notified of the need to reapply to continue their coverage into 2015.  They have announced a conference call on the transition at the following dates and times:
