Western Mass Organizations Decry Spike in SNAP Case Closings/Denials:
Last Friday, MLRI and the Food Bank of Western Mass hosted a regional meeting of state and national anti-hunger organizations, local State Representatives and the aides of local Reps and Senators. The meeting was scheduled in part to give update on state and federal legislation around SNAP and Child Nutrition programs as well as check in with community groups about the SNAP access problems they are seeing.
On Monday afternoon we received word that USDA and DTA agreed to EXTEND the deadline for SNAP to February 18th (Wednesday) for certain SNAP households to request SNAP "replacement" or "misfortune" benefits. These are SNAP households who lost power for 4 or more hours as a result of January 26-28th Winter Storm Juno. The SNAP households who were impacted the most by this storm live on Nantucket and Cape Cod, mostly Provincetown. The original deadline for replacement benefits was February 8th.
