Program Description:

Prisoners' Legal Services (formerly known as Massachusetts Correctional Legal Services)was established in 1972 to provide legal services to people in Massachusetts prisons and jails.  PLS addresses problems through administrative advocacy, legislative advocacy and litigation.

Intake Notes:

PLS accepts collect calls from prisoners and people concerned about prisoners on Monday afternoons from one to four. If Monday is a holiday phone hours are on Tuesday. Massachusetts state prisoners should call on *9004#, which is a speed dial number that is pre-approved on the PIN cards of all state prisoners. Prisoners in county jails and houses of correction should call collect on (617) 482-4124. Family members and friends of prisoners may call free from anywhere in Massachusetts on 1-800-882-1413.

Additional Information About Priorities:

PLS focuses on four issues:  health and mental health care, guard-on-prisoner violence, physical conditions of confinement, and segregation and isolation.  It does provide advice, referrals and pro se materials on matters ouside of these focus areas.  The office does not provide criminal defense services.
